Trail mix – it’s a staple snack to me. Trail mix can come in so many variations and packs well on trips. But we are here to talk about a specific variation a heavenly mix of cranberries, cashews, and almonds. That’s all quite healthy – so why not mix in a touch of indulgence – some butterscotch chips. Trust me – it’s the right touch and worth it.
I personally eat this as a morning snack daily. Sometimes I also add some pretzel sticks or Cheez-It crackers as well. (but don’t mix those in ahead of time – they just go soggy)
Why make your own?
The stores sell pre-made trail mix. So why make your own? There are plenty of good reasons.
- Quality control of ingredients
- Cost control
- Fun to make
- Kids can help
My kids really love helping in the kitchen. And this is a simple recipe they can help to make without making a mess in the kitchen.
I’m also all about saving money where I can. Now it might not be huge. The store brand I used to buy was about $0.30 an ounce. This I have down to about $0.27 an ounce. That might not feel like a large difference, but it’s a difference of about $1 per batch. If you make as much as me, that adds up over time.
Where to find ingredients
I’ve found these to be the best stores to buy the ingredients.
